If you needed any further confirmation that Japanese anime studios are scoping out potential foreign audiences when they greenlight a new show, this is it. The series has "Region 1 license" written all over it, with a dizzying American pop-culture pastiche designed to amuse fans on either side of the Pacific. The story begins in Stern Bild, an ultra-modern city where DC/Marvel-type superheroes are a fact of life—except that they have corporate logos plastered across their skintight suits and have their exploits shown on TV as if it were a professional sport. That wry premise alone ought to sell the series.

Once again, a high price tag and no English dub will probably keep casual fans from picking up this release. But even in Japanese, the tone of the vocal performances is clear: lots of loudness and silliness. The subtitles stay true to certain details of the language, such as sentence endings ("nano da"), but at the same time the text retains a conversational flow, even managing a couple of colloquialisms in English.

Serious Galaxy Angel fans will probably be the ones to get the most enjoyment out of the extras; this is one of the few franchises where the voice actresses are just as important to the series as the actual characters. As mentioned before, the "Angel Rune Sentiment" short film starring Aya Hirano (Kahlua/Tequila) is probably the big draw here, although a separate short featuring Satomi Akesaka (Nano-Nano) gets the script with the better plot. Textless ending sequences round out the extras on the disc, while the case comes with a booklet containing episode and character trivia, as well as a reversible cover.

This edition of Galaxy Angel Rune continues with its fluffy comedy ways, stopping only once for an interesting little genre spoof. The idea of cute space cadets getting trapped in a classic horror movie plot does have its entertainment value—but that only accounts for a quarter of the disc's running time. Elsewhere, it's all about cute space cadets making fools of themselves in a far more conventional manner. There's nothing artistically special about it, and the plotting only goes as far as thinking 5 seconds ahead to the next slapstick gag—but those who like what they've seen of the series so far can at least be assured that they'll enjoy this one too.

Volume 2 of Princess 9 brings our gals closer to something resembling a team. This volume fills in the remaining holes and gives some important background for the series as well. And, as usual, Princess 9 carries impressive art and outstanding music.

The interpersonal relationships are really tested in this one. That is what makes this series stand out from others: it is almost completely character-driven. Not only do we get to see the struggles of putting together this rag-tag baseball team, but also what happens in the girls' personal lives, and it's all done without gimmicky super powers or giant robots. To add to the mix, the series carries the same weight it would for a high school-er, meaning the threat of utter failure is there. The audience is not guaranteed that everything will succeed. Granted we "know" the baseball team will continue, because otherwise there is no more series, but the thrill of the moment is still there through each of the trials the girls face to keep it going.

Ah, the power of celebrity. When you're Yasuhiro Nightow ("the creator of Trigun," as the press kits have reminded us many times), it doesn't take much effort to get the best in the anime business to produce your next creation. With animation from MADHOUSE and a lush background music score, Gungrave Vol. 1 gets the externals right, but it's still trying to find a story.

Some people will watch the first episode of Gungrave and see plotless, bullet-ridden drivel--and they're absolutely right. Grave is only interesting when he's shooting up monsters, and even then, the only thing that sets him apart from any other silent, coat-and-hat-costumed badass is that he fires his guns cross-handed. It's fortunate for us, then, that the next three episodes are an extended flashback that carries more dramatic momentum. However, because of the way the pacing works, most of this momentum comes from wanting to know what led up to Grave's circumstances. When do Brandon and Harry cease being friends? How does Brandon die? With the slow story development, there's only time to watch the first push that propels Brandon into the criminal underworld. Next thing you know, you're at the end of the DVD. The common device of giving a key endpoint first and then working your way there from the beginning might be the only thing keeping people interested in these early episodes.

Despite him being the central character of Gungrave, it's hard to take an interest in Brandon. He says so little that what we know of him is based on how he responds to his friends and foes. Still, we get a sympathetic picture of the hero: someone who's deeply loyal to his friends, and a victim of circumstances he didn't create. Most of the other characters in Gungrave are, like Brandon, thugs who let their guns do the talking. With such a monotonous cast, it's remarkable how easy it is to tell them apart--but that's due more to the varied character designs than individual personalities. Everyone tends to talk the same way and wear the same pained expressions on their faces, no matter what their role in this street drama.

Yasuhiro Nightow deserves plenty of credit for populating the stark world of Gungrave with distinctive-looking characters. Studio MADHOUSE renders these characters cleanly and precisely, while turning down their color palette a few notches to make things appropriately grim. The backgrounds, set in a poverty-stricken coastal town, perfectly complement the mood of the show. What may surprise viewers the most, however, is the quality of the animation. Because the TV release of Gungrave looked so choppy, the animation was touched up for the DVD release and the results here are fluid enough for discerning eyes.

The English dub of Gungrave succeeds through its subtlety. The voice actors, most of them male, have the relatively simple job of sounding tough and serious. There's no need for vocal acrobatics, so none are applied. Brandon has the tone of an inquisitive young man, while Harry sounds more experienced and gung-ho, as befits their personalities. What detracts from the dub, however, is the freewheeling tendencies of the English-language adaptation. Some of the revised phrases do sound more natural than the direct translation, but changes lines from "it's business as usual for such things to happen" into "things happen, and sudden death is just a fact of life" seem like a lot of unnecessary churning. In trying to make the world of Gungrave sound hard-boiled, the dub script takes more liberties than it really needs to.

The one aspect of Gungrave that's beyond reproach is the excellent background music. Drawing from a wide range of 20th-century styles, the music is at turns brutal, languid, tender, and all shades of emotion in between. This soundtrack sets all the right moods for each scene, and the sophisticated theme songs lead in and out of each episode wonderfully. If the other elements of Gungrave were as solid as the music, it would be a near-flawless series.

With its slick visual style and a music score to match, Gungrave looks and sounds like it has potential to be a great crime drama. The way things are going, however, it'll be a slow ride, and Brandon could definitely stand to be a bit more talkative. If Gungrave is to remain interesting throughout the show's run, the story needs to move along faster than it's been doing so far.

14-year-old Izumi and 13-year-old sister Mitsuki leave home when their father's attitude towards Mitsuki's beloved pet Pochi (as well as the questionable way their father has started to look at them) make remaining untenable for them. Desperate for a job and place to live, they happen across a mansion advertising an urgent need for live-in maids. To Izumi's dismay, they discover that the filthy-rich Master of the mansion, one Yoshitaka, is a like-aged boy with perverted proclivities who lives alone so that he can do what he wants, and for him the prospect of two middle school-aged maids walking around in alluring maid outfits is a golden opportunity. While Mitsuki happily plays along, Yoshitaka coerces the feisty Izumi into complying by holding a substantial debt over her head (various expensive things tend to get destroyed when she's around, you see). A third middle school-aged girl soon joins the household when classmate Anna, who originally had a crush on Yoshitaka, develops an even stronger one on Izumi and opts to serve as a maid to be closer to her. Various antics ensue, including two rivals to Yoshitaka popping up, Izumi becoming an Internet idol, the ghosts of Yoshitaka's parents meddling in the affairs of the living, Izumi and Mitsuki's parents and little sister Karin showing up from time to time, and everyone having to deal with the girl-obsessed alligator Pochi, but always Mitsuki finds a way to resolve issues with inventive contests.

Back in 2001, Gainax explored the possibilities of a cute teenaged maid and a “little sister”-type maid living with, and working for, an orphaned middle school-aged boy otherwise living alone in Mahoromatic, so with this 2005 adaptation of the original manga by Mattsuu and Asu Tsubaki Gainax has returned to familiar territory. That this series shares several key staff members with the Mahoromatic franchise should be no surprise, given the similar basic premises and visual styles; the character designers are the same for both, for instance, and director Shouji Saeki also helmed the Mahoromatic: Summer Special and upcoming Mahoromatic: Taidama Okaeri special in addition to serving as assistant director on the second season of the TV series. Saying that someone who loves Mahoromatic should love this one, and vice versa, may be going too far, however, for while both are primarily fan service-laden comedies and have other distinct similarities, He is my Master is, in many senses, a diametric opposite of Mahoromatic; one can easily imagine the Gainax creative minds choosing this one to allow them to revisit the same idea from a totally different angle.

Chief among the differences are the characterizations. Whereas Mahoro was proper, well-mannered, infallibly efficient, and relentlessly kind, Izumi is a firecracker prone to beating the crap out of people who piss her off (typically as a result of some form of sexual harassment) and an incompetent cook. Whereas Mahoro had such a petite build that it became a running joke and typically dressed conservatively, Izumi is well-endowed and often forced to dress provocatively. Whereas Mahoromatic's Minawa (aka the “little sister”) was a hopelessly shy uber-moe incompetent, Mitsuki is not only cheerily outgoing but also the series' most competent character. Whereas Slash was an able companion to Mahoro, Pochi is a menace to everyone except Mitsuki but especially Izumi when she's wearing something sexy. An even starker contrast can be seen in the male leads. Mahoromatic's Suguru, despite his copious stash of porn magazines, was otherwise a decent, intelligent, and respectful guy with many close school friends and potential love interests, while Yoshitaka is outright evil in his exploitation of the circumstances to foist costumes on the girls, spy on them, sexually harass Izumi, and otherwise make Izumi's life a living hell. On the rare occasions that he does show respectable merit, it never lasts or is part of some grander scheme.

That Yoshitaka is so evil is where some of the series' charm and a good deal of the series' fun factor come from. Characters like him in anime rarely get to be male protagonists, so he is a welcome change of pace in content otherwise awash with common romantic comedy clichés. Anna's relentless lesbianism has become an all-too-common archetype, and tough-minded and much-harassed heroines like Izumi are a dime a dozen. The girls' mildly creepy father is also an archetype that has also popped up a little too often of late, and the alligator Pochi is a little too similar in temperament to Hayate the Combat Butler's Tama (although this series came first by a couple of years). The girls' mother, while not an original character, is much more amusing for the way she merrily encourages Izumi to hook up with Yoshitaka. The one true breakthrough character is, quite surprisingly, Mitsuki, who gradually shows that her cheerily innocent disposition masks a subtle but almost frightfully effective talent for manipulating people; although her resorting to contests to resolve things may be eyeroll-inducing after a while, in retrospect the contests usually prove to be tailored specifically towards producing a desired result. If anyone is in real control in this series, she is.

The fifth disc of XXXHOLiC shows, all at once, what makes this anime so great and yet so disappointing. On the one hand, the idiosyncratic characters and tone of the series allow it to approach a variety of genres: human drama, fantastic folk tale, even light spots of comedy. On the other hand, that kind of variety—along with the lack of a continuous plot—makes it difficult to find a cohesive center. Of course, some of the blame can also be placed on the source material; the manga doesn't hit any major developments until the chapters that would eventually be adapted into xxxHOLiC: Kei. What these episodes do offer, however, is a stylish and distinctive world, filled with stories about the mysterious ways of spirits—and the even more mysterious ways of humans.

No episode explores the mysterious ways of humans better than the first one in this set: the appropriately titled "Self-Mutilation," about a girl who repeatedly sabotages her own life in order to avoid success and happiness. If that doesn't sound like anything from the manga, you'd be absolutely right; this episode is actually an adaptation of NISIOSIN's "OuterHOLiC" spinoff short story. Because of that, perhaps, it is also more cerebral than the typical XXXHOLiC outing—the grand climax is an intense philosophical discussion between Watanuki and Yûko, which, although it worked decently in prose, actually comes out in animation as deadly boring. Fortunately that's offset by the visual delights of the Monster Procession episode, where Watanuki and his rival Dômeki travel through a folklore-inspired otherworld. Although scant on story and character depth, the art and design alone are enough to impress—as well the the always-comical interaction between the two boys.

The snowball fight episode, meanwhile, is purposely designed to be scant on story: this is a pure diversion, a chance to see the characters' personalities as portrayed through snow sculpture. Although amusing enough with its slapstick and action—especially when Yûko gets her comeuppance—this episode also exemplifies just what is wrong with the series. We could be learning about just how Watanuki's character is "changing" (come on, it's Episode 19 already), or digging into exactly why Yûko happens to own all that memorabilia from the CLAMP universe (sharp eyes will spot it in an early scene), but no ... we get 22 minutes of a snowball fight. And the last episode on the disc, although appropriately suspenseful, is about as typical as they come: client comes up to Yûko, presents a personal dilemma, and then eventually gets what's coming to her. It's been done, folks. This kind of spook-of-the-week treatment is exactly why the XXXHOLiC anime never quite reaches the potential of what it could be.

Even the animation itself is an example of not reaching full potential; one only needs to go a few minutes into the first episode to see what happens when animators fumble their way through the show's unusual artistic sensibilities. (Watanuki goes tromping down the street like a malformed man-spider.) And really, it's a recurring theme: the spindly character designs, which look so effortlessly stylish when standing still, become almost nightmarish when put into motion. Even the Monster Procession—with its panoply of colors and literally dozens of unique creature designs—show signs of cutting corners with sloppy linework and jerky motion. Special effects aren't immune to lousy animation either; the tale of the cursed photo loses all its subtle horror by going way over the top with dramatic dripping and fading. With a little more polish and subtlely, this anime could have really captured the unique aesthetic of the series.

Visual inconsistency aside, at least the music gets it right—the combination of light electronic ambience and orchestral grandeur perfectly compliments Yûko's mysterious world. And sometimes, it is silence that speaks the loudest: a tense scene can be made all the more powerful once you realize that the only sound is that of the characters speaking to each other. Suga Shikao's opening song also captures the series' air of enigmatic mystery, with a minor-keyed, jazz-tinged number, but the rock ending by BUCK-TICK is perhaps a little out of character.

Speaking of character, the English dub continues to be marred by one very noticeable shortcoming: Todd Haberkorn's high-pitched overacting as Watanuki. Yes, we know he's supposed to be cantankerous, but doing it in the style of a screaming wailing Nabeshin comedy character just doesn't fit. On the opposite end, Colleen Clinkenbeard's cool-headed Yûko pretty much nails it; the other side characters fill in their roles quite nicely as well. The dub script takes its fair share of liberties from the original translation, mostly to re-structure a sentence or make an idiomatic phrase work better in English, but one can always switch to subtitles anyway, which are accurate even to the point of honorifics and Japanese food names. Aside from language options, though, there's little else to find on the disc unless you're a really big fan of textless credit sequences or pathetically undersized image (read: screencap) galleries.

Lucky Star is what Seinfeld might have been had it been animated, featured high school girls instead of adults, and slanted specifically at hard-core otaku. It is a show about nothing, one which lacks any semblance of a plot and seeks to derive its entertainment value from inane conversations about mundane topics and more anime, manga, and game references than you can shake a Popsicle stick at. The way it progresses, one might almost expect the Ramen Nazi to pop up at some point and say, “no ramen for you!”

It is also not a show everyone is going to “get.” In some senses it resembles Azumanga Daioh in its stream-of-consciousness approach to examination of the ordinary, although this series relies much more heavily on its dialogue, and comparatively little on its visuals, to induce its humor. In fact, as much as it pushes to find entertainment value in conversations about whether you eat the strawberry first or last when eating cake, or whether or not Tsukasa and Kagami have a mutual telepathic connection because they're twins, it often gets entirely too casually conversational for its own good; although the conversations are nearly always fully-animated, you will be hard-pressed to find a volume of anime with less action of any kind in it than this one, and some of the conversations are, quite frankly, boring. To keep scenes from dragging too much, each episode frequently (and often abruptly) shifts gears when conversations start to wear thin, resulting in a half-dozen or more of such conversations per episode. Of course, for most who become fans of the series, the obsessively fan-pandering side of the content is where the true fun is at. All of the girls are so specifically tailored to represent fan-appealing traits that their characterizations become a self-aware joke; Konata is an otaku who almost doesn't seem to see herself as a girl, Kagami is the tsundere girl always getting riled up by Konata, and Tsukasa is the lovably meek and pathetic girl. Seemingly all-knowing Miyuki, as Konata often points out, has the perfect laundry list of fanboy-loving traits: a good body, glasses, an unfailingly pleasant and friendly disposition, and faults that perfectly play into the moe stereotype. Konata spends much of the first four episodes going around tossing off random anime, manga, and game references whenever possible, with additional details to be found in background shots, incidental music, and so forth. It will take an astute fan who is very up-to-date on popular series (and especially the other works of Kyoto Animation) to catch all of the references, which in this volume include multiple Full Metal Panic!, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Shuffle! references, in addition to To Heart, Gunbuster, Sgt. Frog, Getter Robo, Wedding Peach, Case Closed, Cromartie High School, Pani Poni Dash!, Crayon Shin-chan, Galaxy Angel Rune, Star Blazers, Blade of the Immortal, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Peppered throughout are various video game references as well as pop culture jokes likely to sail over the head of American viewers, which may make veteran fans wish for an option equivalent to the pop-up ADV Notes seen on some parody-heavy titles released by ADV. Regrettably Bandai Entertainment got their hands on this one instead, and they don't do that kind of thing.

Although humor is scattered sporadically throughout each episode (and some will find the content much funnier than others), the most consistently funny parts are the Lucky Channel bits which constitute the last 90 seconds or so of each episode. Obviously these were done as filler in a series whose content struggles to cover the allotted time, but the way host Akira Kogami bounces back and forth between chirpy cuteness and a dour, jaded attitude, and the enormous difference in vocal and dialog styles when she shifts personas, is nearly always good for a chuckle. Accompanying her in these bits is Minoru Shiraishi, a male student who pops up very briefly in the regular content's background at least once per episode and adds the additional in-joke that he is voiced by a seiyuu with the exact same name. (Unfortunately this joke gets totally lost in translation, as Bang Zoom! opted not to change the character's name to align with English VA Sam Regal in the English dub.)

The artistic style used here looks so different from any of Kyoto Animation's other efforts that even dedicated fans might not recognize this series as one of theirs on look alone, though the frequent references to the studio's other titles tip their hand. Instead of the lush, full-bodied richness normally seen in the visuals for their works, KA opted for a vastly simpler and cruder look in both character designs and background art, perhaps with the notion that such a look would be more conducive to parody. The girls are certainly cute enough, and even the twins with identical hair and eye color have easily-distinguishable looks, but these are also basic designs characterized most by the frequent use of a catlike curl to the mouth. For all the lower visual quality elsewhere and emphasis on dialog, the animation actually turns out surprisingly good and detailed, especially in the vivaciously-animated opener with dance sequences reminiscent of Melancholy‘s closer or Kodocha’s second opener; they don't even miss the jiggling breasts in the cheerleader scene, which is the only even mild bit of fan service evident in this volume.

In 1998's Kite, Yasuomi Umetsu explored the dark, gritty world of a teenage girl assassin. Though little more than a clone of La Femme Nikita on the surface, the piece was practically drowning in atmosphere (to say nothing of the hardcore sex scenes, added as a compromise to get the film produced in the first place). Violence was cranked up to achieve a sort of visual poetry; a hyper-realistic backdrop of urban decay that echoed the loneliness and emotional turbulence of its protagonist, the abused girl assassin Sawa.

Those expecting more of the same in Kite: Liberator, which is more of a spin-off than a direct sequel coming ten years later, will probably not find what they're looking for. Indeed, this new work has little in common with its predecessor, other than the general set-up of a girl assassin.

Actually, Monaka isn't so much an assassin as much as she is a super-hero. Often springing into the scene just when a dastardly act is about to be committed, she saves the day when the police aren't able, filling criminals full of holes and leaving a trail of feathers in her wake. Each afternoon she works for Rin Gaga, a flaming middle-aged punk rocker with a lovely eyepatch and a creepy maid café at the edge of town. She lives with her uncle and cousin, and while there's nothing particularly horrible about the life she leads, like most teenagers she's aching to get out on her own.

Meanwhile, her father is an astronaut on the international space station. Due to an unfortunate mishap with the new medically-enhanced curry rice served aboard the ship combined with the radiation of the sun in space, he and a fellow astronaut are transformed into lethal killing machines made of solid bone. Never mind how the science of this is supposed to work; the show seems to realize how ludicrous this is and proceeds without working up an explanation. After destroying the space station and killing hundreds, new Calcium Fortified Daddy crash-lands in Tokyo. Only Monaka can stop him!

At this point, one might intuit that it's nearly impossible to take this OAV seriously. One of these admittedly tired anime set-ups might be difficult (or at least, slightly unpleasant) to swallow. When both of these worlds combine they simply become ludicrous. One might think this unintentional if it weren't for an increasing pattern of silly homages peppered throughout the show, building to a crescendo just as the story reaches its climax. They're subtle, but depending on how easily you can recognize all the genre tropes, they're pretty damn funny.

Umetsu, who is nearly 40 at this point, cut his teeth in the anime industry during the OAV boom of the mid 80s. Kite: Liberator seems to reflect fondly on those days, when the musings of a young man -- usually involving science fiction, cute girls, violence, monsters or some combination thereof -- could get funding for production with little to no adult supervision. The result was usually something of a bizarre mish-mash (sometimes barely making sense), but just as often engrossing and even mind-blowing in its day.

Kite: Liberator seems to take the modern expectations of realism and lovability (moe, if I must use the term here) and uses them to pay homage to these 80s orgies of visual spontaneity in a deliberately male flight of fancy: in one scene Monaka will trip over herself and cutely spill a drink, in the next she'll be doing backflips and filling a criminal full of holes. Then she'll be falling in love, eating ice cream, and going through her spreadsheet of hit jobs. Minutes later, she'll be fighting her calcium monster father, realizing that her exploding bullets don't work when there's no skin to penetrate. Just when the genre clash can't get any more ridiculous without falling off the metaphorical cliff, as if sensing that he's taken the silliness about as far as he can, Umetsu does what the last episode of The Sopranos did: he stops.

The technicals are inspired without being lavish, clearly being more the product of hard work than an overflowing budget. CG looks mostly good (with the exception of one or two awkwardly rendered cell-shaded cuts) but 2D is where the piece really shines. The attention to detail and consistency is nothing short of stunning. Seldom does a character have so much as a hair that strays off model. Music is lush and orchestral, punctuated with sweet ballads performed by voice actress Marina Inoue.

Voice directing, on the other hand, were never Umetsu's strong point, and the Japanese cast (lead by Inoue as Monaka) turns in unformly passable but uninspired performances. The English dub by Bang Zoom works a talented cast and a good eye for dialogue to mostly strong effect (Xanthe Huynh as Monaka particularly shines in her moments of feminine strength), but the production is sloppy. I've never seen so little regard paid to matching lip-flap in an English production before. In many places, it seemed like the Japanese matched the mouths better; in others, it seems like some sound effects have even been bumped out of sync.

Many will hate Kite: Liberator. As a story it makes little sense. It chops and splices genres in the silliest way possible. Admittedly, it isn't as effective as it could have been. The straight-forward nature of many scenes doesn't quite maintain the goals of the piece as a whole. But taken as a gentle, self-reflective Tarantino-style satire, it works. And lord, if it isn't a whole lot of fun...

If ever there was a title that really didn't tell you anything about a show, Spiral would be a good answer. If there was ever a box cover that didn't give you an inkling of what the plot of the show might be, the answer would again be Spiral. The reality, however, is that these are the most telling things about Spiral, a show that's all about mystery, intrigue and keeping your cards close to your chest.

And that's really what Spiral does best, throwing out plot points like shrewd bets from a poker-faced card shark. A bold opening move, answered by bluffs, cunning bets and a quick move into the call, where the episode comes to a nail-biting conclusion. Each episode manages to surprise at the end with its expertly woven drama and suspense.

Spiral, in a lot of ways, resembles what Case Closed could have been, had Jimmy Kudo not been miniaturized. The show starts out being about solving mysteries, but tends to favor the darker subject matter of murder and conspiracy. And as only anime can do, it all must be solved by our piano-playing, brother of a legendary detective and high school student hero, Ayumu Narumi.

He's cool, seemingly apathetic and disinterested, but this facade is quickly cast aside to reveal that he is in fact a deep character, awash in his own doubts and concerns about the events surrounding him. Ayumu also sports an unnaturally quick and analytical mind, maybe cultivated by his hobbies—cooking, playing the piano and making his wild hairstyle look exactly the same, no matter what. Ayumu quickly becomes a favorite because of his justifiably cool demeanor.

Alongside him is his mystery-solving counterpart, Hiyono. Their chance meeting ends up giving Ayumu the edge he needs in his adventures. Hiyono has the skills that a brooding, sharp-minded loner of a male like Ayumu lacks, namely an information network and boobs. Together, they unwillingly unravel the mysteries surrounding the Blade Children.

The characters are an area where Spiral seems like it could shine. There's quite a bit of focus on the core and their motivations and fears. Characterization makes up a large chunk of some episodes, and while on occasion it can drag on, most of the time it's a good balance to the more suspenseful parts of the episodes. Assuming it doesn't become a crutch and time-filler in later episodes, anyway.

Spiral does deal with crime-solving to some degree, but only to set up the major plot. The real meat here is from the matches of wits. Not once do the characters resort to fists, swords, guns, martial arts, magic or any of the orthodox methods of settling a dispute in anime. When the gauntlet is thrown down, it's Ayumu's brain against his foe's, as he tries to always have one ace up his sleeve without his opponent knowing.

This is where the suspense Spiral does so well comes in. Once these battles start, it's one reversal after another. Just when you think that Ayumu has won, his play is overturned by his opponent and he's fighting again to one-up his foe. It's not far removed from watching a really good game of cards, though a bit slower-paced. It's really much more exciting than it sounds, helped a lot in part by a particular piece of music the show uses over and over when the battle is about to come to a conclusion.

Ryoko's character design is a bit out of the ordinary for an Anime high school girl. Unlike the usual character design, Ryoko's legs aren't ultra thin and ridiculously long; in fact her legs are actually quite thick, reasonable for a person of her athletic nature. Still her design is very cute, and her cuteness is expertly brought out by her actions, mannerisms and speech.

English dubbing on this title is very, very good, although not quite perfect. One shortcoming in the English dub is how Wendee Lee says "Sempai" when referring to Kiribayashi. In the Japanese dub she clearly does not like addressing Kiribayashi with the honorific title and therefore "Sempai" comes out more as a mutter. The English delivery does not make Ryoko's dislike of using the term quite as blatant. With this complaint in mind, the English dub could otherwise be said to be almost perfect, a very impressive accomplishment. It's also very cool that they decided to keep the Japanese honorific in the script; many English dubs chose to remove Japanese honorifics.

“Gotta catch 'em all!” takes an interesting turn in the next three volumes of Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yûgi, here collected in a 3-in-1 reprint omnibus edition. After discovering that her best friend has allied with the implacable enemy of her newfound companions, Miaka is more determined than ever to gather the Seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku and wish her life back to normal again.

Interestingly, though, gathering the Suzaku Warriors is much less of an epic project than readers who think they know where this reverse harem series is going would be inclined to presume. Finding Tasuki and Mitsukake, while diverting side adventures in their own right, seems little more than a pleasure jaunt for Miaka and her companions. And not to spoil anything, but suffice it to say that Chiriko finds them. No, of far greater importance in this now-classic shoujo manga series is the relationships—particularly those relationships between friends and lovers—that are put to the test by the improbable events of this otherworld fantasy. In volumes four through six, we see Miaka lose Tamahome to brainwashing, Miaka regain Tamahome through the power of her love, Hotohori confess his love to Miaka even though she is unable to reciprocate, and Yui's devotion to Miaka transform into jealousy and hatred. It's quite a lot of ground covered for a “mere” comic book, and it's emotionally gripping.

Containing four episodes on one disc, Bandai does a good job of packaging. Also included is a set of stickers, which I thought added a fun touch. Packing aside, I didn't enjoy this volume of MS Gundam as much as I expected. In the first place, I thought the characterization lagged a bit at times, with random characters coming and going without any introduction or details. Also, because of the way their actions were portrayed, some of the characters were really starting to piss me off, especially the women. In the first episode, Sayla takes the mobile suit into battle, assuming she can pilot it just after a few sessions in the simulator. Her repeated excuses of, "Oh, I didn't think it would be this hard" failed to elicit any sympathy from me; rather, it frustrated me that she wanted to prove herself in a "man's role" even though she obviously couldn't. As for other females that got on my nerves, Fraubo is definitely one of them. She can't seem to get it through her head that maybe Amuro just doesn't like her that way. She insists on following him around like a whining puppy, and frankly, I could hardly sit through it. The cocky, ignorant Zeon woman, the little girl on board the White Base . . . even though I happen to be a female, I couldn't help disliking women in general after I was through with the disc, they were portrayed like such dumb flakes. (Don't get me wrong, the male characters were getting to me too, especially the childish decisions that Amuro and the rest of the crewmembers were making.)

Despite the aspects of this volume that turned me off, the disc also had some redeeming qualities. For an old series, the animation is rather impressive. Granted, it may not be the most fluid display of cinematic excellence I've ever seen, but it's pretty good considering its age. The mecha fights continue to be exciting and they still deliver an action-packed display of pyrotechnics. There are times in the series when normal sequences are inconsistent with the scenes around it, but that can be expected and excused. One thing I noted about the disc, though, was that the opening theme has been replaced with a spliced montage of the war, with a narrator talking about the war between the Federation and Zeon. The ending theme was replaced with a generic techno-ish beat similar to the ones found on many of the shows that have been aired on Toonami. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not what's supposed to happen. (I could be wrong, though, so please let me know if I am.) Albeit I wasn't a huge fan of the opening and ending themes to begin with, I certainly preferred them to whatever they've been replaced with.

If you've already started watching Mobile Suit Gundam, then by all means, forge on and watch this volume. Even though I didn't enjoy this volume as the ones prior to it, I still recommend it if only for the mecha fights and the obvious realization that volume four is necessary in order to understand the connection between volume three and five. Personally, I'm not a fan of the dub (or dubs in general), but a little bit of discomfort and angst can surely be tolerated for a chance to watch the original Gundam series. If you happen to speak Japanese, though, I implore you to import the series instead, as you'll probably enjoy it much more in its original format. If not, well, Bandai deserves credit for giving it their best shot. So, all in all, it's worth at least a rental.

The English dub is a little better through this run, partly because Nanael sounds less irritating, but still has its weak points. Amongst new roles, the biggest disappointment is the performance of Menace, which strays markedly from the original and sounds much plainer in the process. All of the other new roles are much more accurately-cast and reasonably well-performed, with Billy Regan doing an amusingly appropriate “dirty old man” voice for the staff Setora. The script stays relatively close except for when Setora is being dirty-minded, in which case he uses sexual euphemisms much better-suited to English.

Media Blasters' AnimeWorks label has had some trouble getting this series out in a timely fashion, but at least they include a solid set of Extras. Included on the menu screen are clean versions of both versions of the closer and the third and fourth Gynos Academy bonus mini-episodes; the third one features the Vance sisters in skimpy school apparel while the fourth one focuses on the delinquent Swamp Witch servants. Both are pure excuses for further fan service, although the fourth one is actually funny, too. This volume also has an (unintentional?) Easter Egg in the form of a series-specific interview with the seiyuu for Leina and Tomoe. It can easily be found by merely clicking down from the last option on the Extras menu, which one would do anyway to get back to the main menu.

The spirit of classic mecha shines through most vividly in the visuals, from the imposing robot designs to the hard-hitting action scenes. Even the transformations, which of course are recycled each episode, are an old-school fan's dream with all the interlocking parts and moving mechanisms. Although this series was still a few years too early for the slick digital-animation look, some signs of skillful animation do emerge: convincing smoke and explosion effects, dynamic battle moves for Gaogaigar, and even some fancy character poses (the GGG chief especially). Unfortunately, the throwback designs don't work so well for the human characters, who end up looking decidedly silly: Mamoru's tuft of hair is inexplicably huge, and Gai would be a more convincing cyborg if his locks weren't so ... red and flowing. Also, beware the prolonged flashing sequence in Episode 2 where the Zonders make their battle plan—more than just questionable animation, it's a potential health hazard on the eyes.

With all the burning courage and action in this series, selecting an audio track depends entirely on which language is best suited to ridiculous overacting. Watch the DVD in Japanese and you can enjoy hearing foreign words being mangled (Mamoru's incantation especially); watch it in English and see the challenge of trying to sync the voice actors' yelling with the actual animation (like Gai screaming "Equip," which is about four syllables long in Japanese). To be fair, the English dub actors have basically done what they could to sound like a kids' robot show, given a so-so script that consists mainly of battle cries and plot exposition. In fact, the dub script follows the subtitled translation almost word-for-word at times, so don't worry about this one being a "rewrite."

Extras on this disc are slim pickings: just a gallery of sketches, cleaning opening and ending sequences, and liner notes in the casing.

If these five opening episodes are anything to go by, Gaogaigar is hardly a work of high art. Its main creative goal is to evoke the spirit of Super Robot anime from decades gone by, which it does splendidly. The designs are there, the plot elements are there, even the marketing potential is there. Viewed in the right frame of mind, it's just a wild, lightweight adventure where technology and courage can bend the very laws of physics. But come to it with any higher expectations and it'll only bring disappointment and eye-rolling. All those silly battle cries, overly elaborate transformations, and plot contrivances should be buried by now—but if you truly want a taste of the mecha classics as seen from 1997, this is it.

Though Leina survives her fall from the cliff into the river, she soon washes up in the domain of Menace, a former Queen of the long-lost kingdom of Amara who has been resurrected by the Swamp Witch and now seeks to reestablish her former kingdom, with the spiritually enslaved Leina as one of her first servants. After an encounter there with Tomoe and the angel Nanael results in another big fall, Leina next washes up in the Elven Forest, where she encounters the panty-less half-elf Nowa and the more dignified elf Combat Master Alleyne and also does battle with Airi, a scythe-wielding maid who, along with Menace and Melona, is another servant of the Swamp Witch. Meanwhile, the bumbling Nanael gets called back to Heaven over her ineptness in managing the Queen's Blade matches and is given one more chance to redeem herself else she be sent to Hades or, nearly as bad, exiled to Earth. Tomoe and Shizuka also have their share of additional problems as they encounter difficult terrain and run afoul of Elina (who is out searching for Leina with her entourage) and a skilled female assassin under the guise of Elina's page.

Produced by Bee Train, the animation comes across as crisp and clean with a look that appears to mix traditional cel animation with newer computer aided animation. There's no bulky CGI getting in the way, but it's quite clear that many of the colors are beyond the traditional media. The animation manages to stay with the heavy action in the series, giving the characters an almost fluid feel. The creators also do a good job in helping the seriousness of the storyline to come out with well thought out sequences and shots that rival many good dramatic movies. Despite its violent tone, the creators took an interesting step in keeping the actual blood letting down. While blood does make an appearance, it's shot in a very dramatic fashion, leaving much to the imagination of the viewer. The overall feel and style of the art and animation goes a long way in helping to accentuate the overall story being told.

Hardcore shoujo fans will love His and Her Circumstances, and people new to the genre would do well to sample this one first. The pacing is just right: not too slow, not too fast. The rapid-fire editing and quick story pace make it much easier to sit through and vastly more entertaining than 90 percent of the other shoujo series available on the market. The only real complaint to be had is that the dub cast is a little below average. The voices all sound a little too old, and some of them seem to have difficulty pulling off their lines with conviction. Other than that, the series cannot be recommended enough to fans of the genre.

The show also manages to retain the sense of poignancy it's had since the first episode. The music beautifully complements the simplified and elegant visuals, and there are many themes about the quiet beauty of high school life to be unearthed. There are still moments of wild comedy, but for most of the episodes on this disc, they seem to be muted. Hideaki's thumbprint is on these episodes in full force. His highly artistic and meaningful directorial style brings new depth and emotion to an otherwise stagnant genre. Simple title cards, words expressed over images, and other unique touches fill the series to the brim with believable emotion. It's unlike anything else, really.

Up until now, the show had also avoided extreme melodrama, which is an unfortunate staple of most shoujo anime series. With the introduction of the childlike (and highly annoying) Tsubasa character, the show takes a turn towards the highly dramatic and things get a little ridiculous. Thankfully, the show avoids the pitfalls that melodrama usually brings. Characters do not randomly do out-of-character things, and the plotline manages to stay on the rails and not go too far off into flights of painfully angst-ridden fancy. If you can take a little melodrama, then the direction the series starts to go in on this disc will not disappoint.

Introspection does indeed seem to be the focus of this show. Most of the episodes consist of either Yukino or Arima's inner monologues about who they are and how they became that way. Reactions are deeply internalized and analyzed, and the characters are given a huge amount of depth in this fashion. Motivations are never a mystery; while the other characters might be clueless, the audience never is. This is responsible and intelligent writing, and thus it makes the show a million times more satisfying to watch than most other shoujo anime series--in which the characters do stupid things without motivation, never explain themselves, and nine-tenths of the problems could be solved simply if someone speaks up. His and Her Circumstances never quite reaches this level of maddening frustration, and it's refreshing.

For as small as it is, the human mind is a place that man will probably never finish exploring. If anyone has a rough map though, it's Satoshi Kon. Famous for Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and his early psychological thriller Perfect Blue, he's hailed as one of the most gifted directors in the anime industry. Finally venturing into the world of anime series, it's of no surprise that he brought all of his talent and artistry along with him. Paranoia Agent takes the best parts of all his films and uses them as a springboard to create what is arguably one of the best thriller series ever animated. With touches of social commentary and a mind-blowing dive into human psychology, the show presents itself as a masterpiece that is both freakishly beautiful and incredibly creepy.

The instant the DVD menu flashes onto the screen, viewers know they're in for a ride like none other. With eerie images of old men with huge, contorted eyes, or little boys with evil smiles flashing on the screen, the ambience is set. From the first frame to the last, Paranoia Agent gives off the same sinister atmosphere that Perfect Blue did and keeps viewers bolted to their seats in awe. In the world of visual media, few things have the ability to give people the chills on a consistent basis. One of these though, is the image of little children giggling in an empty hallway, staring at you with blank eyes. Kon must have known that, because the opening theme, titled “Dream Island Obsessional Park,” is filled with nothing but the different characters standing around town giggling, vacant eyes bared for all to see. It is without a doubt one of the most unsettling opening sequences in recent anime history; by the time the show starts, you no longer know what to expect.

Right off the bat (dented, of course), the audience is greeted with a first glimpse of social commentary. The camera pans across seas of people all talking on their cell phones, completely cut off from the people around them, yet perpetually linked to someone miles away. It may seem like a trivial way to start the series, but it proves to be a reccurring theme throughout the episodes, especially with snatches of “I don't trust anyone anymore!” dispersed through the crowds. In fact, it's issues of trust and generational gaps that make the series as engaging mentally as it is on an entertainment level.

The first character introduced is a spacey woman name Tsukiko. She works for a firm that designs and markets mascot characters, including her recent smash hit Maromi, a pink dog-like creature with equally vacant eyes. On her way home from work one night, Tsukiko is assaulted by an attacker, whom she later identifies as a bat-carrying, rollerblading kid with a baseball cap. Hospitalized for serious injuries, she becomes the starting point for a police investigation bent on tracking down the mysterious “Shounen Bat.” At the same time, a tabloid writer is on her case too, wanting to know everything he can about her life and the people around her. Before long though, he falls victim to the golden bat as well.

What's fascinating about Paranoia Agent is the way that the characters all develop and feed off each other. Each episode is devoted to a new character, showing how they tie in with the previous characters, and how their lives lead them into contact with Shounen Bat. This continual tag-team effort is a breath of fresh air in the world of storytelling. It manages to focus on someone new each time, but weaves such an intricate net of character relationships and psychological bridges that it never feels episodic. From Tsukiko's brush with the golden bat, to the tabloid reporter, to a few students, teachers, and policemen, the relay hand-offs between episodes are seamless.

Psychologically, each character provides a differently angled view of the same things. This is where Paranoia Agent gets fun, pushing the show over Creepyville and into the Land of Mind-Shattering. Each character has his or her own psychological problem. Tsukiko sees her Maromi doll as a living, breathing thing that interacts with her. A student named Yuichi senses the world distorting around him everywhere he goes, feeling helpless in a land of self-created delusion. A professor's assistant continually fights with the other half of her multiple personality disorder… No matter how many times you watch these episodes, there will be something new to catch your interest. Watching these episodes is like analyzing case studies, only with a heavy Kon-esque flair that pushes everything into the realm of suspense that Perfect Blue was so well-known for.

Of course, anyone familiar with Perfect Blue knows that it's far from straight-forward and easy to understand. Paranoia Agent is no exception. Luckily, Geneon has included the perfect extra feature to help with this—an interview with Satoshi Kon. The answers are insightful and fascinating, and if viewers weren't already entranced with the series the first time around, the interview might just make them rethink their opinions. There's so much to be learned from the conversation that it really casts the show in a different light afterwards. To one-up it even further, Geneon threw on storyboards for the first four episodes onto the disc, too. Giving you the option to play through the volume with just storyboards, or have them in a separate screen next to the anime, this is a fun feature to mess around with, if somewhat useless.

Even so, the anime is where all of the magic is held. A series with so much artistic vision absolutely needs to be complemented with stunning visuals to match. With Madhouse, anything is possible. The animation is amazingly fluid and lets the scenes transfer just as swiftly between time and location as the story. If ever animation could reflect “stream of consciousness,” this is what it'd be like. Throw in a color palette that is so dark but lightly highlighted with vibrant colors, and the entire viewing experience is breathtaking. Even the eye-catches are gripping, carrying on the mood with splattered blood and other eerie images.

Aurally, it's just as mesmerizing. With a music score created by Susumu Hirasawa, the soundtrack varies between funk and industrial for some of its tunes, to blends of “noise.” Using everyday sounds like whooshing air, buzzes, heartbeats, and the clangs of subway bells, he fuses these together into a rhythmic soundtrack that rises and falls with the pace of the series. Manipulating human emotions with his music, Hirasawa creates a soundtrack that would be torturous to listen to by itself, but breathes life into the scenes that it's set to.

When it comes to sound though, there's another aspect of a DVD just as important, and this is the language tracks. Once or twice in all of the episodes, the sound dropped out a little in the Japanese track. It's not so major that it would hamper the viewing experience, but it is noticeable. It's possible that this was fixed for the final pressing of the DVDs, but there's no way of telling until the release date becomes closer. The English language track was devoid of such problems, so if anything, that should at least make dub viewers happy. If that won't, then maybe the stellar dub will. New Generation Pictures has put out some incredible dubs in the past, and they live up to their reputation well with this project. The voices are amazingly well-cast, and the actors chosen all deliver their lines impeccably. A lot of work was put into making sure the voices match the characters' personalities to a tee, and it shows. In terms of bilingual releases, this one is a surefire winner.

Even just four episodes in, it's safe to say that Satoshi Kon's directorial foray into serialized anime was a huge success. Bringing all of the experience and ingenuity that he's garnered through his other works, he makes Paranoia Agent one of the best series to be released this year. With the careful way that Geneon has handled this property, viewers can be assured that they'll get their money worth. Paranoia Agent is a beautiful thriller deserving of only the best praise.

This volume features Sousuke hanging out with a Kaname look-a-like hooker.

If you're a fan of the Full Metal Panic! franchise and that doesn't get you to see this volume, I don't know what will.

Seriously, though, the meltdown by Sousuke that marked the end of the previous volume becomes the focus of this volume as an uncharacteristically directionless Sousuke wanders around the near-deserted Hong Kong trying to sort out where his priorities do (and should) lie. This is not Sousuke as you have seen him at any previous point in any FMP series, as the incident with the prostitute attests. During this time he finally encounters the mysterious Sensei of the twins, and his identity should surprise no one who is a long-time FMP fan. Although the Sensei has a lot of interesting things to say about Sousuke and basic plot elements underlying both the original series and Second Raid, the reaction he gets from Sousuke truly justifies sitting through the comparatively slow-paced episodes 11 and 12. While not necessarily out of character, it is nonetheless a bit shocking.

That leaves only the final regular episode to wrap everything up, and as a result, the climatic mecha battles feels rushed, overly easy, and unimpressive compared to the steady and careful development of the series. Kaname finally shows up in grand fashion, and the manic behavior of Gates again proves to be a highlight, but more interesting is Sousuke's behavior afterwards. The story is not over when the battle is won.

The extra-length bonus episode, by comparison, marks a return to the humorous, free-wheeling style seen in the Fumoffu? episodes. It not only provides the volume with its requisite quota of fan service (Tessa has never looked better!) but reveals highly amusing insight into some important cast members; we get to find out who is a closet otaku, for instance. The cost of the volume is almost worth it for this episode alone.

As ever for the franchise, the sharp, vibrant artistry (even when showing darker-hued scenes) and solid animation provide for a pleasing visual experience. Lamba driver special effects in the climatic battle scenes are suitably impressive, and the animation adds in some neat tricks if one watches carefully with them. The OVA episode in particular shines in the exaggerated reactions of crew members, Tessa's luxuriously pretty look with her hair down, and a few amusing details that can pass so quickly they can easily be missed if one is not especially alert.

The musical score is at its best in the sillier scenes in the bonus episode, while it disappears for long tracks in episode 11 and 12; such scenes do not require music to set the mood however, so it was a good choice. In places where it is present the soundtrack relies on standard franchise themes, and the opener and closer remain unchanged. The English dub provides no letdown from previous volumes, with the highlight this time being Gates' dialogue involving the twins in the last episode. All the English actors once again prove capable of delivering on the more emotional content, as well as having a bit of fun in the OVA. The English script through these episodes is somewhat flexible but never strays too far.

In addition to the bonus OVA episode, the on-disc Extras include Japanese audio commentary for all three episodes, the last two parts of the Hon Kong Location Scouting documentary, and textless songs. The interior cover sports bonus artwork, while the booklet this time includes profiles and an art gallery for some key characters and equipment and two pages of Story Files. It also, unfortunately, includes the return of the hard-to-read print seen in volume 2.

While the last regular episode does ultimately bring the series to a proper ending, it also leaves some nagging questions unanswered, such as the exact nature of Kaname's Whispered ability. At the time of this writing no word has come about possible further animation for the franchise, but the final episode does leave the window open for that possibility. If this is to be the last animated FMP content, though, then it certainly could have done much worse. This volume may not be as strong in its writing as the previous two, but it is a respectable close-out for the series.

You can find the counters of several takuhaibin delivery companies in the arrival lobbies of airports. If you intend to send luggage to a hotel, make sure to contact the hotel before doing so. Not all hotels may be able to accept deliveries due to lack of storage space.

It makes OoFuri better than other sports animes. Even if some characther backgrounds aren't fleshed out, you get the feeling that you know them well because of all the conversations. And it's not a 1-player team, everyones support and great play got them through the first game (and will get them through the upcoming games - or so I hope).

OP rocks, though 1st season 2nd OP was better (that home-throw by Izumi was superbly animated).

Looks like there will be some drama because Mihashi misunderstood Abe (again).

Abe is the teams catcher, and also one of their better batters. His skills as a catcher were developed during middle school, when he played in the Seniors league. Abe was paired with a talented pitcher named Haruna, whose pitches were so hard and lacking in control that he was constantly covered in bruises. However, he persevered, knowing that if he could catch Haruna's pitches, he would gain a place as a regular. Although he succeeded, Abe soon began to resent Haruna, who strictly refused to throw more than 80 pitches per game, even if it meant walking off the field, and never followed Abe's signs. Because of this, Abe initially values Mihashi for his obedience, desire to stay on the mound, and control. However, he comes to appreciate just how much work Mihashi puts in, and is determined to win games using Mihashi's pitching and prove to him that he is a good pitcher.

Abe has a very short temper, particularly with Mihashi, and is noted to have a loud voice, even when laughing, which intimidates not only Mihashi but sometimes his other teammates too. However, when this is pointed out to him, he takes great pains to be more patient with Mihashi and speak more gently. He was charged by Momoe to look after Mihashi, and he takes this very seriously, constantly monitoring Mihashi's practicing, what he is eating, and how much sleep he's getting, causing Izumi to note that he's very bossy. Abe is also a driving force on the field, generally shouting out instructions to his teammates during play, and closely analyzing the opposition. He uses this habit to his advantage as he is very good at predicting which of Mihashi's pitches will cause a batter to strike out.

My first shiatsu massage

I opened my eyes suddenly. He was smiling at me. Then I realised I must have fallen asleep. It was a strange feeling. Energised, refreshed and relaxed, all at the same time. And it was so enjoyable. If that is a full body shaitsu massage, I want another.

Shiatsu massage is done fully clothed, but nothing restrictive must be worn, I was told. I lay on a futon on the floor. He started by placing his hands on my stomach and closed his eyes, just sensing my energy. Then he started to work his way around my body using all sorts of massage techniques combined with stretching and pulling of my arms and legs.

But the best bit was when he worked around my head and neck. That felt so good. And when he moved down my spine with his hands chopping and kneading. My whole body tingled and I felt a rush of energy. I think it was about then that I must have drifted off to sleep.

What is a full body massage?

The session starts with some questions. General health, problems, pain, tension spots and any existing medical conditions. This builds a case history. If you have a number of regular treatments your case history is kept current with the results of each session.

Lying on your back, the giver kneels down beside you and places a hand on your abdomen. This is a 'hara' diagnosis. The Japanese word 'hara' means your centre and it reveals much about your energy system to a sensitive shaitsu practitioner. The shiatsu massage technique involves stimulating or relaxing the acupuncture points or meridians of your body.

The word 'shiatsu' means 'finger pressure'. The purpose of these massage techniques is to release and balance the flow of 'ki' or energy, at points where it has become blocked or overstimulated.

A full body session will include work on your abdomen, chest, shoulders, arms, hands, head, neck, legs, feet and back. You get your arms and legs pushed and pulled. You are kneaded and chopped with hands and static finger pressure is applied at specific points on your body.

Why do you feel both energised and relaxed?

Your body has a network of energy channels or 'meridians' in which your 'ki' flows. This unseen network follows similar pathways to the nervous system and provides a constant supply of life-giving energy.

And just like a busy freeway, blockages in the flow can occur. But unlike a freeway these constrictions often do not clear naturally, causing local pain, tension, irritation or even illness. And because the meridians connect all the organs together, it can cause problems in other parts of your body too.

Shiatsu clears these blockages, freeing your energy, so you feel energised. Clearing blocked energy releases tension. The massaging techniques and the power of 'human touch' has a tremendous relaxing effect on your whole body. This is why you can fall asleep. Where does this form of massage originate from?

Shiatsu massage started in the 6th Century in Japan. The modern-day founder of shiatsu as a therapy is Tokujiro Namikoshi and the Institute for Shiatsu therapy which he opened in 1925 on the Island of Hokkaido. After 20,000 graduates, shiatsu is widely practiced in Japan. It is also practiced in China but is called acupressure.

The study of shaitsu involves a lot more than just finger pressure and massage techniques. Students study anatomy, physiology, the meridians and energy 'circuits' of the body, pressure points, case studies and 'hara' diagnosis.

They must have many hours of practice on volunteers and they must be fit and strong. A practitioner must be comfortable sitting, kneeling and squatting on the floor. Something we are not use to doing in the west.

We all lead busy lives balancing work, homes, relationships and many other triggers for stress and tension. These triggers build slowly but surely, especially if your life is 'full-on' with little rest and relaxation. In turn, the vital energy that flows around your body becomes constricted and blocked causing pain and discomfort. Mihashi, the main character of the series, is a nervous boy with no self confidence. He is shown to have always had this personality, (which seems to come in part from his father, who displays some of the same mannerisms) however, it became much more pronounced in middle school, where he was bullied by his teammates on the baseball team after gaining a place on the team apparently through favouritism, as his grandfather owned the school. The other members of the team were resentful of this and felt that their reserve pitcher, Kanou, was far more talented than Mihashi. However, Mihashi refused to give up the mound and pitched in every one of their games, even when his teammates stopped trying and the catcher wouldn't give him signs to throw. Eventually, Mihashi decided to change schools for high school and succeeded in gaining a place in Nishiura. Although he felt guilty for ruining his junior high teams enjoyment of the game, and thus promised himself he wouldn't play baseball in high school, Mihashi let slip that he was a pitcher, and is thus dragged into the baseball club, who had no other pitcher.

Although Mihashi is convinced that he has no talent, he has been practicing hard at pitching since elementary school, and his new teammates, in particular the talented catcher, Abe, are astounded at his highly accurate aim. When pitching, he divides his target into nine sections, which is said to be above the level of a professional pitcher, who would divide it into four. Mihashi also has four breaking balls, including unusual fastball which often confuses opposing batters. His pitches are said to be quite slow, although with training from Momoe his speed increases later on in the series.

Mihashi's relationship with Abe as a battery is often strained, with Abe quick to lose his temper and Mihashi fearful of angering him, however, Mihashi greatly respects Abe and is eternally grateful to him for wanting to be his catcher, noting that if it weren't for Abe's skill at reading the opposing team and calling for the right pitches, Mihashi could never make anyone strike out. Abe, in turn, appreciates how hard Mihashi works on his control and his dedication to pitching for the entire game. With his help, and the encouragement of his new teammates, Mihashi's confidence in his pitching as grown slightly, though he still firmly believes it would be nothing without Abe, to the point that Abe promises not to get sick or injured for their three years of high school, in order to be able to catch all of Mihashi's pitches.

Mihashi gets on well with the rest of his team mates, particularly Tajima, who always seems to understand him even when Mihashi can only stutter a few words. He was childhood friends with Hamada, who he calls 'Hama-chan', and they lived in the same apartment building until Mihashi moved away. He is also close to his cousin Ruri, having lived with her family during middle school, though he dislikes it when she calls him 'Renren', and is also friends with Ruri's neighbour, Kanou, who was his rival for the position of pitcher in middle school. Although he became more formal with Kanou in school, likely out of guilt for not giving up the mound to him, Kanou has always thought that Mihashi was a better pitcher than him. They are now on good terms again, and Mihashi calls Kanou by his childhood nickname, 'Shuu-chan'.

Despite his low self-confidence, Mihashi is very stubborn, refusing to give up the mound even when so exhausted that he starts losing control of his pitches, and becoming upset at the idea of the team needing a reserve pitcher. He is quite guillable, loves to eat, and has a fear of dogs. Mihashi's grades are very poor, and he says he had to work hard in order to get into Nishiura. He loves pitching so much that his mother mentions he's always holding a ball, even in his sleep.

Look at Tokyo today and you will see what the Tokyo- jin (meaning Tokyo people in japanese) have that we don't have in our cities- bustling streets with thousands of people waiting to cross the roads, giantic television screens on the sides of buildings, high school students roaming the streets of shibuya after school and fashion statements made everywhere you go! It never cease to amaze travellers in Tokyo at the amount of things all happening all the same time, and most are often left dazzled by everything they see.

So, what can you do in Tokyo when you are there? (provided you are not "paralysed", dazed and standing in the middle of the street).

What can you do there: Many things..

But before you have fun getting lost in a foreign land without no knowledge, how about learning how the train works for a start? That's a good start, if you are intending to use public transport, and you can probably pick up the rest from there.

Some quick points..

1) Trains are called JR (Japan Rail) and there are many trains stations all over japan. The whole system of train routes and stops is a massive spider web and it takes some understanding of the sytem to get from point A to point B in Tokyo.

2) To get to most tourist spots in Tokyo, you only need to know about Yamanote train travel. Learn to get on to Yamanote train travel from your local train station and the rest is easy.

3) If you are going to travel intensively by train, it's advisable to get a unlimited JR train ticket from major state train stations like Tokyo and Osaka train stations- costs savings overall.

Things to do:

Using JR trains, you can just about get to anywhere you want in Japan. There's also a shinkansen (bullet-train) to get from state to state but it's rather expensive for a ride. Places like Ueno, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Ikebukuro, Ginza and Harajyuku are places you should look out for as they are the main tourists spots with heaps of Japanese culture and attractions.

Any cancer can cause a sufferer a huge amount of pain while the diseases ravages his or her body. TENS is not meant to be a primary treatment for mesothelioma. It supplements the actual treatment of the tumors. Additionally, as this relies on electrical impulses, it is not good for people who have heart abnormalities or palpitations.

After looking at what bat rolling is, and how it is done. We will now take a look at the differences in the equipment being used.

The Design

The clamping method to secure the bat between the rollers has evolved into two basic designs. The very first parallel rolling machine had two rollers, a top and bottom. It also had four points of adjustment to regulate the amount of compression to the bat surface. The newer machines that have copied this design, have a combination of top and bottom rollers, and just a single central point of adjustment. A much more simplistic design, and as they claim, possibly better.

My Choice

I prefer to use the machine with the much more precise, four individual adjusters. One at each corner of a heavy steel plate, to which the large aluminum blocks, that hold the bearings the roller shafts are set into, are fastened. These adjusters are a machine nut, on top of a machine washer, threaded onto a heavy duty 1/2" steel shaft. The machine nuts can be turned at very small increments to give an exact degree of adjustment to the steel plate the rollers are secured to. This in turn adjusts the exact amount of compression to the bat being rolled. And the amount of pressure being applied can be determined by using a very precise inch pound torque wrench. It is like assembling an engine or delicate piece of machinery. All the pieces have to be put together with the exact amount of pressure or the engine will not perform up to its potential. The same thing is true for your bat. Exact pressures and compressions, during the rolling process, will give you the ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE from your composite bat.

Central Adjuster

Is it what they claim it is? I don't think so. The central adjuster is just a single threaded bolt, that is secured to the roller plate, with a bar welded to the end to be used as a turning handle. The person rolling your bat turns this handle by hand, to determine the amount of compression, and the amount of pressure being applied to the bat surface. He determines the amount of pressure by how hard it is to turn the handle and also how hard it is to turn the bat while between the rollers. The amount of compression is determined by the amount of turns to the handle, which really is pretty accurate. If there are 10 threads per inch, it is easy to figure out how many turns you need to get the amount of compression you want. Very simple. I think the manufactures of these machines should supply a socket, adapted to their handle, that can be used in conjunction with a torque wrench. This would a least allow then to determine a more precise amount of pressure being applied to the bat surface. If any of them read this article it won't take them long to catch on, you wait and see.

Roller Length

To me the roller length is one of the lesser important factors in the rolling process. The area to be rolled should be 1 1/2" from the and of the bat, and 1 1/2" from the start of the barrel taper to the handle. The sweet spot. However there is no rule of thumb as to how long this area is. If the rollers are shorter than this area, the bat will have to be repositioned between the rollers, to make sure the entire area is covered. If not you will have an erratic bat. I have seen some of the videos the newer single point adjustment roller manufactures have put out, as well as the people using them. All the videos show the bat being rolled in one area only, near the end. They are not doing a complete roll, because they are missing the area near the taper on the longer barrel bats. The whole barrel is used for hitting, it should be rolled as completely as possible.

My rolling machine has 7 inch rollers. I take my measurements and tape off the whole sweet spot area using blue painters tape. It comes off easy and doesn't pull anything with it. This gives me the exact area I need to roll and protects the bat surface from being scared if the rollers happen to spin while rolling. Now, if my rollers happen to be longer than the sweet spot, I just add some white athletic tape on top of the painters tape, which raises the surface enough so the roller only contact that area. Simple I always roll the complete hitting area no matter how big or small it is. When a bat is rolled properly all aspects of the being rolled must be taken into account. You can not use the same methods on every bat as the new single point machine manufactures would suggest. It takes much more than just the turning of a couple handles to get the ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE out of your bat.

Akihabara is known as Electric Town or Gamer's Mecca.

Chuo has the Tokyo Kua. It is concidered to be the first sauna and spa in Japan. There is also the Tsukiji Fish Market also known as the Tokyo Metropolitan Cenral Wholesale Market. Tokyo tours may include this famous fish market with over 1600 stalls. There are some very strange and bizarre sea creatures to be seen and purchased. Roppongi is known for its wild nightlife. Though Roppongi Hills offers lots of shopping and dininig. The National Art Center Tokyo is also located in Roppongi. Shinjuku Gyoen is the place to see cherry blossoms during the spring. There is also an English garden and botanicla conservatory to explore.

There is so much to see and explore that a Japan tour is the best option. Sightseeing is satisfying with someone who knows the area and what it offers.

Japan's Little League Baseball Champions put up a tremendously great game against the United States Warner-Robbins, Georgia Little League Team. The US kids won, but they had to fight to win, it was no easy game. Japan's stock market is coming back up and they have a tremendous civilization and lots of technology driving their economy. How do they do it?

Well, they do it quite a bit different than the United States as their society and civilization is much more authority based and structured. Still Japan even with their huge surpluses of cash reserves is not without their own growing crisis issues.

What do I mean by that? The aging issues and changing demographics are a huge challenge there, as Ken Dychwald's comments? This should concern the US also; it concerns me. You see, we also have an aging population here. Hopefully Japan can solve this problem and we can watch how they do it as a case study and analyze what will work for us, as if they can solve the problem in Japan, then Europe is next with their aging populations, then the US right after them and this aging demographic switch takes place.

GDP and population growth curves seem to hold some weight in the reality of Nation's economies, but we really cannot keep this World population rate increase and as more people enter the middle class the amount of waste to keep them all there and the demand will over tax all Earth's eco-systems. Scared yet - we all should be, the crisis is real.

The total population in Japan is also quite high, but they are managing it, they have the occasional Earthquake disruption, but their civilization always recovers. Hopefully the tectonic plate cracking issues will not come in the next 100,000 years or we could see the modern version of the sinking of Atlantis. I mean they are not only in the Ring of Fire - they are dead center on a hot spot. I feel the Kuril Islands are in for an 8.0 or greater, so the dispute between Russia and Japan could soon be irrelevant.

Japan and the Japanese people are nothing short of miraculous and resilient and seem to be able to over come any obstacle. Japan has made quite an economic come back indeed, well done, still not without challenges, but not bad at all. I am impressed with Japan's civilization in many regards, their ingenuity and structured society. Taking that to a more traditionally Western Society might be difficult, but many building our cities of the future should take note. I believe that Space Colonies of Japan may prove quite good, due to their Earthly accomplishments.

Japan could have a Technological Revolution in coming years and some Futurists who predict this admit that they kind of already do, lately have floundered in the robotic arena (upsetting corporate setbacks with the Asimo robot programs), but that will come back, along with the Nikki that has now turned around.

Indeed, I have a friend from Japan, he was a school teacher there. Nice guy and I have read up on MIT Media Lab and the joint projects with Japanese, and followed their space program. Recently, read a book on Japanese Society that was quite interesting and take Japan Today Online. It is good to have such strong allies in the First World and studying the Japanese system makes a lot of sense, in fact we could all learn a lot more from each other.

From the more modern and cuddly pokemon to the cinematic cyberpunk of "kira" the range is amazing and its influence on modern western media and younger generations across the world is increasingly evident. Not only have western animation companies adopted Japanese styles over the last decade or more, even pop culture and fashion itself has adopted some of the aesthetics of Japanese animation.

Historically the phenomenon known as Anime had its humble beginnings around 1917 with the oldest known anime first being screened in Japan. It was, poignantly enough, an animation of a Samurai testing a new sword. The first Anime with audible speech was produced in 1933 and again presented much more of an adult theme than its western counterparts. Japanese animation, influenced by Walt Disney and other early pioneers, was like a new pen in the creative arsenal of Japan. This particular pen would ultimately prove mightier than the sword at influencing the world abroad.

The archetypal style of Japanese animation being refined from the 1940's through the 1970's was largely based on a desire to produce Disney level product on a tighter budget. This style, pioneered primarily by the legendary artist and animator known as Osamu Tezuka and his team, is occasionally criticized as overly simple animation since it often involves most of the frame remaining still while a character's mouth would speak. Regardless, it was a breakthrough that allowed the animators to produce at the budget they had available. Although it was invented out of necessity, it later became a desirable aesthetic style of animation which is popular around the world today.

Rain, rain, go away......The month of June signals the beginning of the rainy season in Japan. During this time of year, umbrella and blue tarp merchants are sure to make a killin'! For those who plan to visit Japan during this time of the year, the good news is that plane tickets are usually cheaper in June. The bad news, the humidity will be so high, you'll wish you had paid a higher fare for another time of the year!

During June (ROKUGATSU) in Japan, you are bound to hear the words MUSHI ATSUI. These translate to "humid", "hot and muggy", or just plain "miserable"! When speaking these words in Japanese, be sure to accent them with a moaning, groaning sound for the full affect! Most every Japanese person you see will be carrying a fan, wearing a hat, wiping sweat from their brow with a handy handkerchief, and looking very tired! Of course, the good thing about Japan is that it is an island....so a swim is close by for most Japanese citizens and sticky tourists!

TSUYU (the rainy season) can be a troublesome time of year for more reasons than the heat and humidity. The numerous amounts of rainfall often wreak havoc on Japanese homes and hillsides. After the heavy rains, mudslides and landslides frequently terrorize the Japanese people. The blue tarps, mentioned above, are used to cover the roofs of Japanese homes that have been damaged by the heavy rains and aftermath.

I recall, in the small village I once lived in, that the local temple was almost destroyed by the torrential rainfall. The shrine sat atop a hill that overlooked the valley. The heavy rains created a mudslide that caused the hillside to tumble into a small creek running along the road. There were actually branches and cars floating down the stream near my apartment!

Another site a tourist in Japan will see are numerous mountainsides that are covered in concrete. While definitely less than pleasing to the eye and what I would consider a scar on the natural beauty of Japan, these do have a purpose. For without the refortification by the local authorities, most of the Japanese islands would now be lying on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean!

So, if you plan to travel to Japan this time of year, be sure to take an umbrella. Better yet, you might be sure to purchase a SUDOKU puzzle book for the airplane flight and the hotel room, because you may be indoors most of the time!
